The stressors and losses of divorce impact certain people in ways that result in their engaging in ongoing conflict with their former partner. These cases are in the minority but they take up immense amounts of court time, the costs involved are huge – both in financial impact and in the devastation to the children’s healthy development, with resultant fracturing long term of parent child relationships. The recent developments in neuroscience, integrated psychology and EMDR have opened to us new and alternative ways to move these cases forward into a healthier future. We will discuss research-based interventions through psycho-education, group work, intensive therapeutic interventions and the treatment of underlying trauma. Parents can learn appropriate emotional expression, reduce or heal their trauma reactions, step aside from ineffective defense mechanisms and create more effective and respectful parent to parent communication.
